What to avoid before a waxing appointment

Waxing Contraindications: What to Avoid Before Your Waxing Appointment

At Studio Wax Esthetics, your safety and skin health are always our top priorities. While waxing is a safe and effective method of hair removal for most people, certain medications, skincare products, and health conditions can make your skin more sensitive and increase the risk of irritation, lifting, or injury during a waxing service.

If you're planning a waxing appointment, here are some important contraindications and things to avoid beforehand.

Medications That May Prevent You From Waxing

Certain medications can thin the skin and make waxing unsafe. Please inform your esthetician if you are currently taking or have recently taken any of the following:

Accutane (Isotretinoin)

Accutane significantly thins and sensitizes the skin. Clients should wait at least 6 months after completing Accutane before receiving waxing services.

Topical Retinoids

Products such as Retin-A, Tretinoin, Differin, Adapalene, Tazarotene, and prescription acne medications can increase skin sensitivity and the likelihood of skin lifting. Avoid waxing in areas where these products are being used.

Oral Antibiotics

Some antibiotics can increase photosensitivity and skin sensitivity. Please consult with your provider and notify your esthetician if you are taking antibiotics.

Steroids

Both topical and oral steroids can thin the skin and increase the risk of irritation and injury during waxing.

Skincare Products to Avoid Before Waxing

To minimize sensitivity and achieve the best results, avoid the following for at least 5-7 days before your appointment:

  • Retinol and retinoid products

  • Chemical exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs, glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid)

  • Prescription acne treatments

  • Aggressive exfoliating scrubs

  • Chemical peels or resurfacing treatments

Other Situations That May Require Rescheduling

Recent Sun Exposure or Sunburn

Waxing sunburned or recently overexposed skin can cause significant irritation and damage. Wait until your skin has fully healed before scheduling your appointment.

Recent Cosmetic Procedures

Please avoid waxing if you've recently had:

  • Chemical peels

  • Microneedling

  • Laser treatments

  • Cosmetic injections in the treatment area

  • Recent facial surgery or skin procedures

Your esthetician can advise you on the appropriate waiting period based on the treatment received.

Skin Conditions

Waxing may not be suitable over areas affected by:

  • Open wounds

  • Active rashes

  • Eczema flare-ups

  • Psoriasis flare-ups

  • Active cold sores

  • Skin infections

How to Prepare for Your Waxing Appointment

For the smoothest results and most comfortable experience:

  • Allow hair to grow at least 1/4 inch long (approximately 2-3 weeks of growth).

  • Gently exfoliate 2-3 times per week leading up to your appointment.

  • Stay hydrated.

  • Avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure.

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing after body waxing services.
